Exercise to Find Your Sources
of Joy
Set aside a half hour and complete the following exercise:
1. Start a Joy List
Make a list of any and all things that make you happy.
List all of your true passions in life, the things you do that bring
you joy, the pursuits that make time pass by quickly because you enjoy
them so much. You are looking for active pursuits or activities that
tap into a deep source within you, not just spending time with friends
or watching TV. They could be arts, hobbies, creative or mental pursuits,
or anything you connect with. You may or may not have tried them, so
you may only have vague ideas of the "kinds" of things you
enjoy (like you know you're a "people" person, or you love
to write). When you have your list, go through and mark the ones that
give you the greatest joy.
2. Find Your Sources of Joy
To jumpstart your list of life passions, try thinking
about the following things:
- Starting from as early as you can remember
in your life, what are the things that brought you joy and that felt
fulfilling to you? Go through each year and see what comes to mind.
For each memory, ask what was it about the situation that really made
me happy? For instance, if one of your favorite childhood hobbies
was rock collecting, what was it about it that you really liked -
the exploration, the color combinations, the science of the rocks?
Then write those specific aspect on your list instead of just "rock
collecting."
- Consider things you're already doing - pursuits
you enjoy so much that you'd do them regularly, even if you don't
get paid for them. Again, think about what you specifically enjoy
about them, and add those to your list.
- Think about new things you've always wanted
to try that sound like fun, or that sound rewarding.
- Scan your environment for joy-inspiring ideas.
Look for possibilities on TV, in books, movies, stores - wherever
you happen to be.
- Observe other people's joy. Think about people
you know, or you've met in the past, and what brings them joy. See
if you connect with any of their sources of joy.
- If you still haven't come up with many ideas,
consider just trying a few things until you get a feel for the types
of things you enjoy, and those you don't. Adopt the attitude, "I'll
just try it once and see how it feels."
3. Narrow Down Your Joy List
and Take Action
Next, narrow your list down to your 4 or 5 top choices-
and you have some good areas to explore in greater depth. Choose one
areas and decide on one step you will take towards exploring it in the
next week. Keep your list to refer to later as you continue your exploration
process.
And most importantly, have fun!
